The Pontiac Firebird was a sporty compact car built by the Pontiac Motor Division of General Motors and was manufactured from 1967 until 2002. Available in both coupé and convertible body styles, the Firebird was characterized by its aggressive styling and affordable muscle car performance. The car shared the same General Motors "F-Body" platform as the Chevrolet Camaro, also introduced in 1967. Production of both cars ceased in 2002.

Pontiac redesigned its front-drive full-size sedan for 2000, again similar to the Buick LeSabre, with fresh styling but carryover powertrains. Wheelbase and overall length increased by nearly two inches, but head room shrunk slightly and interior leg room was unchanged. Side-impact airbags for front seats were newly standard. GM's StabiliTrak antiskid system was installed in the top-line SSEi model, designed to selectively brake the front wheels to counteract skids in turns. The lineup also included SE and midrange SLE sedans. All Bonnevilles had standard front bucket seats, but the SE offers an optional bench for 6-passenger capacity. Only a 3.8-liter V6 was available, as before, in two ratings. For SE and SLE models, the V6 produced 205 horsepower. In the SSEi, a supercharged version delivered 240 bhp. Both engines were hooked to a four-speed automatic transmission. Traction control was standard on the SSEi and optional on others. Antilock all-disc brakes replaced the previous disc/drum setup, and a tire-inflation monitor became standard. GM's EyeCue head-up display, which projects primary instrument readings onto the windshield, was standard in the SSEi.

Prior to the GTO reintroduction in 2004, Pontiac showcased a more extreme-looking concept in 1999, with blocky styling far removed from the Holden Monaro body used in the current GTO model.

The 1997 Pontiac Rageous concept vehicle was unveiled at the 1997 North American International Auto Show. The Red Rush exterior color accented the low cowl design, the Ram Air hood, the high racy spoiler and the P315/30R22 Goodyear tires.

The Stinger used a special 3.0-liter double overhead-cam version of Pontiac's famed Super Duty four-cylinder race engine, which was based on the ubiquitous Iron Duke/Tech 4 engine family. In that era, Pontiac had developed the Super Duty four-cylinder program into one of the winningest and most versatile competition powerplants ever, providing power for sprint cars, oval track and road racers, drag machines, and even powerboats.

The GTO was technically a violation of GM policy limiting the A-body intermediate line to a maximum engine displacement of 330 in³ (5.4 L). Since the GTO was an option package and not standard equipment, it could be considered to fall into a loophole in the policy. Pontiac General Manager Elliot "Pete" Estes approved the new model, although sales manager Frank Bridge, who did not believe it would find a market, insisted on limiting initial production to no more than 5,000 cars. Had the model been a failure, Estes likely would have been reprimanded. As it turned out, it was a great success.

The two-door, four-seat Banshee IV had a sleek and sensuous futuristic design. Its fiberglass body was painted bright red, while its triangular hood was matte black. A 230 horsepower fuel-injected, single overhead cam V8 engine powered the rear wheels. A HUD system (heads up display) projected speed, engine RPM, and fuel level on the windshield in the driver's field of vision. The dashboard featured video displays and numerous buttons; the steering wheel alone contained twenty. The dual rear wings were also adjustable.

The Tempest line received another facelift for the 1970 model year. Hidden headlights were deleted in favor of four exposed round headlamps outboard of narrower grille openings. The nose retained the protruding vertical prow theme, although it was less prominent. While the standard Tempest and LeMans had chrome grilles, the GTO retained the Endura urethane cover around the headlamps and grille.

The Pontiac GTO was an automobile built by Pontiac from 1964 to 1974, and by General Motors Holden in Australia from 2003 to 2006. It is often considered the first true muscle car. From 1964 until 1973.5, it was closely related to the Pontiac Tempest, but for its final year it was based on the Pontiac Ventura. The 21st century GTO is essentially a left hand drive Holden Monaro, itself a coupe variant of the Holden Commodore.

With the popularity of movies like The Fast and The Furious, Gone in Sixty Seconds and The last Ride, there has been some reference to the good old muscle cars which were immortalised in
movies like Bullit, Vanishing Point and of course The Dukes of Hazzard series. This top ten list has a look at some of the muscle car icons born from the late 60's and early 70's.

The first-generation Firebirds had a characteristic "coke-bottle" styling. Unlike the Camaro, its bumpers were integrated into the design of the front end and its rear "slit" taillights were inspired by the Pontiac GTO. Both a two-door hardtop and a convertible were offered through the 1970 model year (the next generation, dropping the convertible, being announced as 1970 1/2 models).
